Surgical Technologist
Surgical technologists are patient advocates responsible for maintaining the sterile field who assist the surgeon during surgical procedures.

The course is a 12-month certificate program which provides the participant with the knowledge and skills required to enter the field of Surgical Technology. The course includes classroom and laboratory practice as well as a clinical externship at an outpatient surgery center or hospital. The course covers: basic sciences, surgical technology skills, surgical procedures, externship, and management theory. 

The course prepares the student to take the National Certification Exam for Surgical Technologists (CST). This exam is required to be taken and passed. The cost is included in the class fee.

The national CST exam is required for completion of course (exam fee included in course fees) and details will be provided by the instructors. Program cost includes textbooks, lab materials, malpractice insurance, and uniforms. This program is Pell Grant eligible.

  • Provide didactic and clinical instruction that will enable individuals to perform as competent, entry-level Surgical Technologists.
  • Graduate Surgical Technologists of the highest quality who uphold professional standards, and who are fully committed to the roles and responsibilities of a surgical technologist.

Program requirements for graduation

Classroom & Externship:

  • Attendance of 95%
  • Complete a minimum of 560 externship hours
  • Complete all assignments
  • Maintain at least an 80% on skills, assignments, assessments, presentations, projects, participation, and written papers
  • Successfully complete clinical externship
  • Maintain required documentation
  • Complete exit interview
  • Take and pass the National Certification Exam (CST)

  • Ability to kneel, bend and lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand and control bladder for 6+ hours at a time
  • Able to assist in moving patients over 200 pounds

Classes begin January 2021

High School Diploma or GED, health insurance, updated inoculations, and CPR/BLS training required before enrolling.

Tuition: $13,534**

*Open Lab on Friday afternoons and Clinical Externship hours vary from August to December.

Steps to enroll


  • Attend WIOA info session. See AJCC Calendar.
  • Submit program written application.
  • Pass program interview.
  • Set up doctor appointment to complete Health Verification form and get inoculations if needed. 
  • Return all paperwork to Room C5.
  • Attend Orientation to Health Careers (no charge).
  • Enroll in the program after all admission requirements are completed.
  • Complete paperwork (pick up and return to room C5).
  • Enroll in the program after all admission requirements are completed.
    1. If paying in full, enroll with secretary in Room C5 and sign enrollment agreement.
    2. If payment plan is desired, call 925-685-7340, ext. 6730, to make appointment to enroll, set up plan, make first payment, and sign enrollment agreement.
